WHAT IS BOTOX AND HOW DOES IT ACTUALLY WORK?
Updated: Apr 11, 2021
Botox - short for Botulinum toxin is naturally produced by our body.
The drug Botox is made from this toxin and can be used in small doses to reduce fine lines and wrinkles around the face. Eg. Crows feet on the side of the eyes, smile lines, forehead lines and even Gummy smiles.
Botox can even be used in patients who sweat excessively or have over active muscle tension from grinding and clenching their teeth.
Now how does it actually work? Without getting into the boring facial anatomy knowledge - Botox is administered very carefully in the area required to relax the muscles to prevent them contracting therefore not producing the wrinkling effect that so many of our patients hate!
It only takes a matter of minutes to do and no one will ever even know you had it should you not wish to share with them. The full effect of Botox takes 2 weeks to show. It can last up to 6 months. However if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or have any neurological disease please don’t get Botox!
